7.0  ->  7.1 Important changes

This document describes the most important changes that a 7.0 admin should understand in order to take advantage of the new features in 7.1. New features are described with 7.0 as a point of reference and features that are essentially unchanged will not be mentioned here.

The Quick Install & Tour document will guide you through a test installation of 7.1 on a single computer so you can become familiar with the changes. When you are ready to upgrade from a 7.0 installation, read the Server Upgrade 7.0 to 7.1 document, as it will give detailed steps including what to expect once you have upgraded.

If you are upgrading from 6.2 or older, read the changes 6.x -> 7.1 document for details on the many significant changes to both the UI and functionality made since the 6.x versions. You can upgrade directly from any 6.x version to 7.1 (without going through an intermediate 7.0 upgrade) – but be sure to read the Server Upgrade 6.x to 7.1 documentation.

Product Recognition Service, PRS

K2 version 7.1 introduces a major new feature – PRS, the Product Recognition Service which is a cloud service included as part of the yearly Upgrade Subscription Plan for K2 version upgrades. The PRS feature uses data discovered at your site to determine which product definitions are relevant and then these product definitions are automatically imported to the Products window. The KeyConfigure 7.1 user interface is very similar to 7.0 but with some additional wizards and reports that take advantage of the PRS with its greatly expanded product catalogue. Audit reports – Audit (PRGM x comp)

First you may notice "PRGM" is being used instead of "PROD" in report names in an attempt to make the distinction from product reports, "PROD" more noticeable. More significantly, K2 version 7.0 "standard" audit reports focused on Application programs and Utility programs (i.e. all programs other than Ignored). Information on all programs including Ignored was available using Audit Verbose reports, but without the advantage of optimizations that are used by the standard audit reports. Version 7.1 continues to offer both the standard Audit reports – but in 7.1, the standard reports achieve an even greater optimization by focusing only on Application programs, excluding both Utilities and Ignored programs. Verbose reporting can still be done choosing the standard Audit reports and then selecting a checkbox in the Options pane of the Report Builder window that allows you to Include Utilities and Ignored Programs as well, but this will make the report take much longer to run.

Product Status – Referenced, Unreferenced, Ignored

In K2 version 7.0, a product is either "Referenced" or "Unreferenced", depending on whether any Policy or Purchase is configured to refer to the product. Version 7.1 splits off a third category, "Ignored", which means the Product is not only unreferenced but also it will not appear in Audit Products reports. Referenced products cannot be ignored – they will appear in Product Audit reports. But when there is no purchase or policy referring to a particular Product, you can decide to ignore it (or not) in Audit Products reports just by dragging from Unreferenced to Ignored (or visa versa).
